Technical Forecast

Today...

Expect temperatures in the lower 50's. Today expect a period of heavy rain which will bring precipitation amounts between three quarters and one inch of rain. Expect the rain to start around 8 am with the heaviest potential for rain at 2 pm. This rain is associated with a cold front passing through our area this afternoon. Expect the winds to be from the south at 10-15 mph. This southerly flow will keep our area generally more mild as this cold front passes.

Forecast Period...

A cold frontal passage will bring heavy rain into Connecticut with precipitation totals around an inch plus possible. This cold frontal passage will make its way out of our area Tonight making way for a low pressure system to be in our area Wednesday. With this low pressure system, Connecticut will see another series of cold frontal passages moving through the area. These cold frontal passages will disrupt our 50 degree temperatures we have been experiencing for the last few days. Expect windy conditions on Thursday as the low pressure system makes its way out of our area. These winds are expected to be gusting up to 30 mph from the Northwest. As this low pressure system makes its way east a weak high pressure system will move into our area toward the end of the forecast period.

Above is a forecast sounding for New Haven, CT. This shows forecasted Dew Point Temperatures (Green) and Temperature (Red). Notice both of those lines are nearly overlapping...this is indicative of heavy rain. The column of air (the further up in the picture represents higher height) is very moist supporting for heavy rain. Notice Bufkit (this software package) displays a "R" with three dots...that denotes heavy rain in the area at 18z or around 2 pm.
